Viruses have a huge impact on our lives, and we’re making great strides into understanding how to protect ourselves from the flu and HIV. But one thing that scientists have struggled to agree on is whether or not viruses are alive.

A detailed new study of the origins of viruses lends weight to the argument that they are living cells, and offers us a reliable method to turn back the clock and track their evolution.After all, they can't survive or replicate without a host cell, and due to their rapidly changing genes, scientists have never been able to work out how or when they evolved.

Now a study by researchers in the US has managed to complete the first viral tree of life, and it suggests that not only are viruses alive, they're also really, really old, and they share a long evolutionary history with cells. "Viruses now merit a place in the tree of life."

They used computers to scrutinize the folds in 5,080 organisms and 3,460 viruses, the researchers found that viruses and modern cells share 442 protein folds, and only 66 are virus-specific. But those 66 are unlike anything seen in cells, which contradicts the hypothesis that viruses simply took all their genetic materials from cells.

This information allowed them to build a rough tree of life, which showed that viruses share a common ancestor with modern cells, but are more ancient.Viruses also have unique components besides the components that are shared with cells.”

That last point is interesting, because it goes against the idea that viruses were merely bits of genetic material spat out by cellular life, or that they had stolen all of their genes from cells.

The researchers then built a tree of life that incorporated viruses, which revealed that modern viruses seem to have originated from multiple ancient cells, rather than modern cells, and even coexisted with the ancestors of today’s cells.

The confusion about viruses is a result of their unique life cycle. Specifically the fact that they can't metabolise nutrients, and they don't contain the proteins needed to copy their own DNA and RNA - instead they invade other animals' cells and use their equipment to do it for them. This has led some scientists to argue that viruses are merely non-living strands of DNA and RNA taken from other cells, enclosed in a neat little protein envelope.

To make things even more complicated, some viruses have incredibly low numbers of genes, including Ebola, which does all its deadly damage with just seven genes. While others, such as the recently discovered giant viruses, have more genes than bacteria.

Viruses are just about everywhere. In us, on us, around us, at the depths of the ocean along scorching hot vents, even chilling out in the Siberian permafrost; and there are plenty to go around. This ubiquitous and abundant distribution is like what we see with bacteria. And again, much like bacteria, some are harmless, whereas others can do a lot of damage to their host, sometimes even killing them.

To the untrained eye they may sound kind of similar. But there is one (of many) key difference that sets them apart: bacteria are living, and viruses are not. Well, that has been the opinion of many virologists, but there has been a long history of changed minds regarding what viruses are, and this debate is still very much alive.

 The main argument against their status as a living organism stems from the fact that viruses are completely dependent on hosts to replicate. Sure, viruses can survive outside of cells, but they can’t make any progeny. That’s because they don’t own the tools to be able to do so. More specifically, they can’t make proteins from their genetic material, which is why these slave drivers take over a cell and force it to do the dirty work.

That’s not really a clincher, though, as dependence on another organism for survival is not unique to viruses, and even some bacteria and fungi can’t go it solo. And then there are the recently discovered mimiviruses, which totally threw virologists. Viruses were always tiny simpletons with few genes, invisible to the light microscope. But these viruses are so big they were initially mistaken for bacteria, have genomes larger than some bacteria, and own some protein synthesis machinery.
Researchers at the University of Illinois decided to follow their evolutionary breadcrumbs by examining the 3D shape and structure of proteins, or folds, which are written into the genome. That’s because viruses mutate all the time, but changes don’t necessarily affect the crucial folds which impart a particular function.

So they used computers to scrutinize folds of more than 5,000 organisms, almost 3,500 of which were viruses, covering every single branch of the tree of life. This led to the discovery of 442 protein folds that are common between viruses and cells, and 66 only found in viruses.

Today, many viruses - including those that cause disease - take over the protein-building machinery of host cells to make copies of themselves that can then spread to other cells. Viruses often insert their own genetic material into the DNA of their hosts. In fact, the remnants of ancient viral infiltrations are now permanent features of the genomes of most cellular organisms, including humans. This knack for moving genetic material around may be evidence of viruses' primary role as "spreaders of diversity."

Many organisms require other organisms to live, including bacteria that live inside cells, and fungi that engage in obligate parasitic relationships - they rely on their hosts to complete their lifecycle,"  "And this is what viruses do."
The discovery of the giant mimiviruses in the early 2000s challenged traditional ideas about the nature of viruses.
"These giant viruses were not the tiny Ebola virus, which has only seven genes. These are massive in size and massive in genomic repertoire."  "Some are as big physically and with genomes that are as big or bigger than bacteria that are parasitic."
Some giant viruses also have genes for proteins that are essential to translation, the process by which cells read gene sequences to build proteins. The lack of translational machinery in viruses was once cited as a justification for classifying them as nonliving.

We all know how important vitamins are for our existence. However, a recent study raises alarming concerns over the vitamin levels of Indians.

According to a study conducted by Metropolis Healthcare on Vitamin D, Vitamin B12 and Vitamin B9 (Folic Acid) to observe the deficiency and sufficiency of vitamins within the inhabitants across India, 75% of population has shown alarming levels of deficiency.

Commenting on the study Dr. Sonali Kolte, General Manager, Medico Marketing said, "Indians have a lethargic attitude towards Vitamins. Vitamin deficiencies usually develop slowly over several months to years. Symptoms of Vitamin D deficiency are usually vague muscle/joint pain, weakness, bone pain, tiredness, fatigue or even depression. Nowadays it is observed that people who are deficient in Vitamin D are more likely to have diabetes, regardless of how much they weigh. Early diagnosis and treatment can help control the symptoms and prevent health related problems."

In an analysis of over 14, 96,683 patients who underwent Vitamin tests, it was found that
- 81.28% of all samples tested were deficient in Vitamin D.
- 21.02% of all samples tested were deficient in Vitamin B12.
- 15.06% of all samples tested were deficient in Vitamin -B9.

VITAMIN D
Vitamin D deficiency has reached epidemic proportions in India despite ample sunshine. Vitamin D is unique because it is a vitamin synthesized by the body and it functions as a hormone.

Why it is important?
Vitamin D is important for overall good health and strong and healthy bones. It's also an important factor in making sure  muscles, heart, lungs and brain work well and that  body can fight infection. They are vital for everyone and ensure that  body works well and is able to fight illness and heal well. Vitamin D manages calcium in  blood, bones and gut and helps cells all over  body to communicate properly.

Sources of vitamin D
Our bodies can make its own vitamin D from sunlight. We can also get vitamin D from supplements and a very small amount comes from a few foods we eat.Foods that provide vitamin D include:Fatty fish, like tuna, mackerel, and salmon.Foods fortified with vitamin D, like some dairy products, orange juice, soy milk, and cereals.Beef liver.Cheese.Egg yolks.


Deficiency symptoms
It weakens bones, and causes rickets, tooth decay, kidney stones, muscle weakness and poor absorption of calcium.Most common reason to have deficient levels of vitamin D is due to limited sunshine exposure.

VITAMIN B12
Vitamin B12 regulates the functions of the brain and nervous system. It also plays an important role in the formation of blood.

Deficiency symptoms
The common symptoms are weakness, apathy, memory loss, acidity, loss of weight, nausea and vomiting, anemia, mental confusion, delusions, paranoia, respiratory symptoms, hives and other symptoms of allergy. A long-term deficiency can lead to heart attacks or stroke.

Sources of vitamin B12
The important sources of Vitamin B12 are mostly animal products like meat, fish, poultry, eggs and also dairy items. Low Fat Dairy (Skim Milk), yogurt and cheese, along with eggs are the only vegetarian food items that naturally contain significant levels of vitamin B12. Plant foods may be fortified with B12. These include rice and soy beverages, plant- derived meat analogs, ready-to-eat breakfast cereals, and nutritional yeast.


Why it is important?
Vitamin B12 is also used to treat memory loss; Alzheimer's disease; boosting mood, energy, concentration and the immune system; and slowing aging. Vitamin B12 also helps our bodies absorb folic acid, which facilitates the release of energy. The risk of B12 deficiency increases along with your age. Elderly people with low-vitamin B12 are more likely to suffer from brain shrinkage and cognitive decline.

Nna Patekar has offered financial assistance to farmers who are on the brink of committing suicide. According to a report on Indiatoday.in, as a part of this initiative, Nana has donated Rs 15000 each to families of 62 Vidarbha farmers who had committed suicide.
Nana has reportedly visited around 112 farmers' widows in the Marathwada region so far and now plans to connect with 700 more in the areas of Nagpur, Latur, Hingoli, Parbani, Nanded, Aurangabad, Usmanabad, Jalna, Bhusawal, Jalgaon, etc. However, the actor is extremely humble about his charitable act.
Apart from helping the farmers, he has also offered to help farmers who are contemplating suicide as an option to get rid of their worries. He is apparently also trying to initiate a dialogue with the government to urge them to take up the issue.

Ojha said since farmers are backbone of the country, he decided to join the effort without second thought. He assured all support to the effort to help the families of farmers.


Kavita, who is also heading cultural organisation Telangana Jagruthi, said the NRIs wing and others had come forward to adopt 70 families of the farmers.

There are likely hundreds of millions of Earth-like planets in the Milky Way today, but that’s a small fraction of the number that may form throughout the universe in the future, a new study suggests.
       Using data from the Hubble Space Telescope, researchers estimated the rates of past star and planet formation in the universe, which is now about 13.8 billion years old. They then combined that information with data from previous surveys that estimated the amounts of hydrogen and helium left over from the big bang that still haven’t collapsed to form stars. At the time our solar system formed about 4.6 billion years ago, only about 39% of the hydrogen and helium in our galaxy had collapsed into clouds that then evolved into stars, they say. That means that the remaining 61% is available to form future solar systems that may include Earth-like planets in their habitable zones, the researchers report online today in Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society. In the universe as a whole, the researchers suggest, only 8% of its original starmaking gases was locked up in stars by Earth’s first birthday. The rest will, over the remaining trillions of years of the universe’s lifetime, coalesce into stars whose solar systems will contain a myriad of Earth-like planets in their habitable zones.

Abstract


We combine constraints on galaxy formation histories with planet formation models, yielding the Earth-like and giant planet formation histories of the Milky Way and the Universe as a whole. In the Hubble volume (1013 Mpc3), we expect there to be ∼1020 Earth-like and ∼1020 giant planets; our own galaxy is expected to host ∼109 and ∼1010 Earth-like and giant planets, respectively. Proposed metallicity thresholds for planet formation do not significantly affect these numbers. However, the metallicity dependence for giant planets results in later typical formation times and larger host galaxies than for Earth-like planets. The Solar system formed at the median age for existing giant planets in the Milky Way, and consistent with past estimates, formed after 80 per cent of Earth-like planets. However, if existing gas within virialized dark matter haloes continues to collapse and form stars and planets, the Universe will form over 10 times more planets than currently exist. We show that this would imply at least a 92 per cent chance that we are not the only civilization the Universe will ever have, independent of arguments involving the Drake equation.

What To Expect
Asteroid 2015 TB145 is expected to reach its closest approach to Earth at about 1:18 pm Eastern. It'll blast past us at a speed of about 78,300 miles an hour, and should be bright enough to see with a decent telescope and a star chart.

The asteroid's proximity will give scientists an excellent chance to study it. Scientists hope to image it with a resolution as high as 6.5 feet (2 meters) per pixel, and radar measurements will help shed light on the asteroid's precise size and composition. So far all we really know is that it's somewhere around 1,050 to 2,100 feet (320 to 640 meters) in diameter.

The asteroid will be plenty far away, but still close enough for researchers to get excited about imaging it. NASA notes that the fast-moving object "may be cometary in nature." If that's the case, it could be made up of rock, ice and dust, whereas asteroids consist mainly of rock and metals.

The space rock, named 2015 TB145, will safely fly past our planet at 78,000mph (125,500km/h) at 310,000 miles (499,000km) away.
While there's no danger to Earth, Nasa has described the asteroid as 'hazardous' as it comes 4,600,000 mile (7,403,00km) threshold of proximity to our planet. 



That's around 1.3 times the distance between the Earth   and the moon, allowing anyone with a telescope to see the event.


The asteroid, named 2015 TB145, will make its closest approach to Earth on 11:14 a.m. ET (3:14 pm GMT) on October 31, and can be seen by anyone using a telescope.

The 'high velocity' Halloween asteroid's closest approach will take place on 11:14 a.m. ET (3:14 pm GMT) on October 31.

It will be the closest approach to Earth since July 2006 and scientists believe we probably won't see another large asteroid come this close to the planet until 2027.

While there's no danger to Earth, Nasa has described the asteroid as 'hazardous' as it comes 4,600,000 mile (7,403,00km) threshold of proximity to our planet.

The asteroid was spotted by Nasa a fortnight ago, which is relatively short notice for the space agency.

'The asteroid is on an extremely eccentric and a high inclination orbit,' the space agency explained.

'This is the closest approach by a known object this large until 1999 AN10 approaches within 1 lunar distance in August 2027'

Because of its erratic orbit, Nasa isn't sure where it will go, but the space agency says it's confident it will not hit Earth.

It comes just weeks after doomsdayers claimed the end of the world was nigh after Nasa revealed a giant asteroid is heading towards the planet.

Called Asteroid 86666 (2000 FL10), the 1.5-mile wide (2.5km) space rock made its closest pass on 10 October.
Then there were assertions surrounding the end of the Mayan calendar on 21 December 2012, insisting the world would end with a large asteroid impact.

Earlier this year, asteroids 2004 BL86 and 2014 YB35 were also said to be on dangerous near-Earth trajectories, but their flybys in January and March went without incident.
