42---BEST SUPER BLOOD MOON PICTURES

Maybe it’s the light pollution, maybe it’s always cloudy some have yet to experience with my own eyes the magic of these celestial events. Thankfully there are people around the world who not only experience them but beautifully capture it for all to enjoy. Until next time!

Missed it? Want to see it again? You can, with our readers' amazing shots of this rare celestial event.

Several lunar events combined to create a once-in-a-few-decades sight in the sky.

First, there was a full moon. Second, it was a special type known as a harvest moon, since it was the closest full moon to the autumn equinox. Third, the moon was as close to Earth as it will get all year, making it a supermoon. Fourth, there was a total lunar eclipse, in which the Earth's shadow first tints the moon red (hence the name blood moon), then hides it entirely.

The supermoon occurs when the moon is in the closest part of its orbit to Earth, making it appear larger in the sky. A lunar eclipse is also known as a blood moon because of the reddish glow caused by the earth's shadow.

The eclipse was visible in North America, South America, West Africa and Western Europe. While the western half of North America, the rest of Europe and Africa, the Middle East and South Asia observed a partial eclipse.

The supermoon, which occurs when the moon is closest to earth in its orbit, coincided with a lunar eclipse, which hasn’t happened since 1982 and won’t happen again until 2033.

This kind of overlap has only happened five times since 1900. The last was in 1982, and the next will be in 2033. But if you missed it, fear not.

Red moon over Volcan Colima, 27 Sept. 2015.
Rivulets of lava erupted from the summit beneath a blood red moon. Volcan Colima is an active stratovolcano situated in the Mexican states of Colima and Jalisco, 300 miles west of Mexico City. It is one of North America's most active volcanoes.

Using Photoshop merged the two images

It was a one-in-a-million chance that it happened to pass right in front of the moon, snapped this photograph using Canon SX280 point-and-shoot held against the eyepiece of a 5” Celestron 130SLT telescope.

Shot on a Nikon D7000, 200mm (55-200mm lens), F/10, 1.6”, ISO 400. When producing the final image,  brightened the original shots by overlaying four copies of each. Overlaying and some minor cropping all done in GIMP.

Canon T3i and 18-200mm lens on a tripod with IR remote, 10s exposure, f/8, ISO 400. This is a composite of two images merged in photoshop in order to get the statue and moon in focus.
